Situated at Rio’s Botanic Garden, the statue of Friar Leandro of The Holly Sacrament honors the Brazilian Carmelite who was the first director of the Botanic Garden (1824-1829). Member of different foreigner naturalist entities, father Leandro studied philosophy at The University of Coimbra, Portugual and returned to Brazil to teach botanic and agriculture at the Medical- Surgery Academy, in Rio. His statue in the Botanic Garden stands in front of the lake named after him.
